In early [G 11 / Inca] times only those descended from royalty were regarded as part of the nobility. They were given positions as high level officials and administrators. Under Topa Inca Yupanqui, in response to the expanding empire and the need for more officials, some of these jobs were changed from being hereditary to being appointed.
A secondary level of nobility was formed from the official or [G 10 / curaca] class. They were not related to the emperor but enjoyed many privileges. These included yanacona servants, llamas, tax exemption, litters, parasols, special clothes and secondary wives. They made up only a very small part of the population.
When a new people was conquered and the leader submitted to the Inca regime, he was allowed to stay as leader and his children were taken to Cuzco as hostages. They were sent to Inca schools to learn the Inca language, religion, history and how to record data on the [G 15/quipu].
